Hueneme Elementary School District has been acknowledged for its "smart classrooms" and the percentage of Port Hueneme students who graduate high school exceeds that of both the county and the state. Schools within the district have been awarded the Blue Ribbon, which is the highest federal honor a public school can achieve. For continuing education, California State University, Channel Islands is near by.
Economy & Job Market
Port Hueneme has long enjoyed a flourishing economy thanks to claiming the largest commercial deep-water harbor between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The industries of manufacturing and tourism and the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Center keep the job market always in favor of its residents. Agriculture also still thrives in the region's fertile foothills. The Naval Base and the Port together employ more than 14,300 people.
Attractions & Points of Interest
Say "Port Hueneme" in the company of any Californian and they are likely to mention the Point Hueneme Lighthouse. Built to guide ships through the Santa Barbara Channel in 1874, Point Hueneme Lighthouse is identical to the one at another well-known naval base further down the coast called Port Fermin. Today this picturesque landmark is open to the public for tours hosted by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the City of Oxnard has built a Lighthouse Promenade along the fence that leads up to the lighthouse.
Port Hueneme is also home to the only city-owned and maintained beach park in Ventura County. Ninety acres of park land are reserved for recreation and additional facilities, such as the community center, library, historical museum, athletic center, and cultural arts center bring people together in this vivid community.
Parks and Recreation
Taking up 50 acres on its own, Port Hueneme Beach Park includes the broad sandy beach, rustic pier and numerous picnic areas, restrooms and public parking. On weekdays the park is filled with outdoor and fitness enthusiasts, bird watchers and walking buddies. On weekends it serves as a great family destination and several seasonal and annual fares and festivals are held there, including the summer Hueneme Beach Festival and Port Hueneme Harbor Days.
